Karen Schulz, Early Intervention Specialist
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Development and a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Special Education. Most recently I have completed the Master IEP Coaching Mentorship® through the Special Education Inner Circle.
Along with many years of experience and countless professional development opportunities, I have been fortunate to work with some of the great pioneers in the field of Early Intervention. I continue to draw on these experiences, my experience as a mother of two, a seasoned early childhood educator, an Infant Development Specialist and a passionate Early Interventionist.
In addition to my private practice, I am currently facilitating Social Skills Playgroups at Spirited Play Labs in San Ramon, CA.
I Believe In:
Developmentally appropriate practices
Nurturing young children with evidence-based practices
Strengthening families and building strong communities
Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
More specifically, I believe that:
Childhood is rooted in wonder and curiosity. Teaching young children requires the ability to build relationships and to understand the value that these relationships bring.
As an early interventionist, I understand how children learn and subsequently teach to their developmental age, and learning style while using their particular interests as a means of motivation while working to foster a love of learning. I am trained to rely on my observation skills, and my ability to ask open-ended questions; pause and listen carefully. I am committed to the core principle that children learn best when they are supported by individuals whom they have a relationship with. Children learn through play and hands-on experiences, in an environment with carefully chosen materials that represent the real world. Children benefit from space to move their bodies and the freedom to explore with all their senses. Children learn best when they are intrinsically motivated.
An Invitation to Play
Play is the tool that we use to connect, teach, find joy with and love our children. This is why play is essential in early intervention. All children can play. Play looks differently on each of us but fundamentally serves the same purpose. Play doesnt require expensive toys or elaborate constructions. Play happens when something captures your attention and brings you enjoyment.
I invite you to come play and find out where it takes you.
